Having been unable to do any sewing for the past 6 weeks due to a disabled hand I finally went to the library to see if there were any new quilting books. I found an amazing book by Blair Stocker called Wise Craft Quilts. Many of her ideas got me hoping that I will soon be able to get back to my sewing machine. My two favourite ideas in the book are her Sensory Quilt and the Cameo Quilt.
The Sensory quilt is made up of simple 9" square blocks that are adorned with items that are unique to the person for whom you are making the quilt. Imagine making a quilt for your grandmother who may be suffering memory loss. This idea could help preserve and bring back some memories and stories to share together. Not only would you have fun making the quilt but learning more about Grandma's life would be a wonderful thing.
The other idea that really piqued my interest is the Cameo quilt picture. Blair suggests taking silhouettes of family members and using the crazy quilt method to surround the silhouettes. These are made into a great picture. Without sewing mine yet I prepared one of a favourite kid's character. I think this would also work with your favourite pet photos. Especially if they are adorable black cats. Now I can't wait to start sewing my cameo together and adding a frame.
The book offers clear instructions and the patterns are all easy to follow with templates in the back of the book.
This is a new book out and if you are interested in a copy we would be happy to order it for you. I will share my completed Cameo with you all as soon as I can use my sewing machine.
